This morning when I let the pups out I saw a squirrel in one of the feeders. And I do mean in! He must have managed to climb over the top of the plexiglas to get into the feeder and couldn’t get out. He was just sitting in there contemplating his fate. I took off the top but he didn’t move until I reached under the plexiglas and nudged him. Of course Teyla and Rohnan were right there ready to give chase. The squirrel jumped out and climbed down the deck post and as soon as the pups took off to find him he ran back up to the railing, over my hand and across the siding on the house to make his escape.
since I’ve written. This spring was cold and gray up to about a week ago. Had our last frost on June 11. I put the gardens in and they have just been sitting waiting for warm weather to start things growing. They’re growing now but so are the weeds! I have to get out and hoe and then mulch as soon as it dries up a bit after yesterdays rain.
I finally got to my porch extension project yesterday. I’m adding on a 4′ deck to the front of it. I’ve had to stand on the steps to open the door and it was quite awkward so the little deck will be nice. Also give me a place in front to put flower pots, etc. I wanted to salvage the steps and reuse them but wasn’t possible. So I have to run to Cook to get material for that. I should have it all finished by end of today. I love my air nailers! Projects go so much faster.
I’m making a trip to Seattle, WA in July to visit Brandy and Justin and their families. I’ve already booked the flight and am already planning my packing.
I made a trip out to Mission South Dakota last week to visit Manya and Naquel and their families. They sure have some nice homes they built with their boyfriends. I drove out on Monday and came home on Saturday. A lovely 745 mile drive!
The trip didn’t start out so good though. First I couldn’t sleep at all Sunday night thinking about the trip so I finally got up at 3:00 and got ready to leave by 4:00. I don’t know what I was running on that day. But driving thru areas I’ve never been makes it interesting. I didn’t feel tired until right at the end.
I was stopped for speeding 30 miles from home. Who would have thought the highway patrol was out at 4:30 in the AM?!? He was very nice though and just told me to slow down. 400 miles from home and just over 1/2 way there I had a flat! A wonderful young man stopped to help me then told me where I could get it fixed. But the tire was shot so I had to buy a new one. The flat is still on warranty so I brought it back home to see if I can get something for it. I guess it wasn’t such a bad start as the patrolman was so nice and I got help with the tire.
I stopped in De Smet to see the Ingalls’ little house on the prairie and visit the museum. That was pretty cool.
I crossed the Missouri River in SD and that was an awesome sight. I should have stopped for pictures but wanted to get to my destination. The landscape was quite beautiful
The girls waited on supper til I got there around 7 PM. Then we stayed up late visiting. The girls live on the outskirts of Mission, SD within walking distance of each other. They live with their boyfriends who are also brothers in the log homes they built. The boys along with their siblings own a log home building business and and a big store that caters to other contractors. They do bids on both labor and work.
I slept at Naquel’s house as they had the room then spent the days with Manya and her daughter Kiyan while every one else went to work. Manya is pregnant with their second child and due any day. We all got together in the evenings and had supper together.
It took 3 days for Manya’s little girl to warm up to me. She’s almost 2 and wary of strangers and as they live so far away I haven’t seen much of her. By the end of the week she was bringing me books and climbing on my lap so I could read to her. I decided to stay an extra day to do more bonding with her.
The temp was in the 80’s Wednesday and Thursday then down in the 50’s Friday. Saturday morning I awakened to 3″ of snow on the car. But it didn’t stick to the roads so I could head for home. The pups were ecstatic to see me when I arrived and Rohnan would not let me leave gthe house without him for the next 2 days.
I enjoyed the trip and would like to visit again.
6″ of snow yesterday and lst night. the north shore really got hit with up to 14″ in some areas. Thankfully it is already melting but the pups ae coming in with snowballs clinging to their fur.
Supposed to be in the 40’s later this week. Hopefully the warm up will continue.
or is it just toying with us. 46, sunny and snow melting off the roof.
I took the pups for a walk and when I got back I noticed dark spots on the snow out by the bee hives. I put the binoculars on the hives and saw a few bees buzzing around. The dark spots were dead bees they had hauled out and bee poop. Now to wade out there thru 2 -3 feet of snow and make sure they have enuf food to last til bloom time

As of today I have been laid off for 1 year. Doesn’t seem that long.
February 7, 2009 – 4:36 pm
4:30 and the sun is still up. The days are definitely getting longer. The temp made it only to 33 but it felt and smelled like spring. Of course Serena took advantage of the nice weather to take a trek down the road. This time she took Rohnan with her. They were 2/3’s of the way to the mailbox when I caught up with them.
I went down to my cheese cave (a.k.a. my pantry) today and brought out the Parmesan cheese I made last April. It actually tastes like Parmesan! I think I’ll set aside a weekend soon, get several gallons of milk from the farm and make a bunch of cheese.
I used the Parmesan and some cheddar (store bought) to make a delicious broccoli quiche.

I finally got the redesigned website done. I made an index of recipe links on the main recipe page instead of putting recipes there. Now each recipe has it’s own page. All the links are working. Hope you like the new format.
All the links are working.
Guess no one wants a prize for being the 1000th visitor….

I’m redoing the website and some links may not work for awhile. Be patient while I get it figure it out
